What a Franz Josef helicopter flight costs

Franz Josef helicopter prices for 20 flights, from $204 to $1,128 per person: price bands, cost per minute, weight surcharges, NZD vs USD and how to pay less.

Updated October 2026

A helicopter flight at Franz Josef costs from $204 to $280 per person for 20 to 35 minutes with a snow landing, $393 to $506 for the 40 to 60-minute flights toward Aoraki/Mt Cook, and $480 to $508 for a heli-hike with up to 2.5 or 3 hours on the ice. The lowest price of the 20 flights on this site is HeliServices’ 20-minute flight at $204, and the highest is True South Flights’ day trip from Queenstown at $1,128. For a simple first flight, look at Glacier Helicopters’ Franz Josef Glacier Helicopter Flight with Snow Landing: 20 minutes with a snow landing, from $223, rated 4.9 from 57 GetYourGuide reviews.

All prices here are US dollars per person, the price GetYourGuide showed for a real bookable date, checked October 2026. The operators quote New Zealand dollars on their own websites, which is why the same flight can look more expensive there. The live price for your date is always on the booking page.

The five price bands

The 20 flights fall into five clear steps. Knowing which step you are shopping in makes the comparison easier, because the flights inside each band cost almost the same.

$204 to $243: six flights of 20 to 30 minutes. Five are the short snow landing flights from Franz Josef and Fox, with a few minutes on the snow. The sixth is INFLITE’s 30-minute flight, which crosses the Main Divide to land on the Tasman Glacier for $243, only $20 more than the 25-minute flights. Our snow landing page compares the short flights.

$260 to $280: five flights of 30 to 35 minutes. Four are twin glacier flights over Franz Josef and Fox with a snow landing, and the fifth is The Helicopter Line’s Fox Glacier flight that continues past Aoraki/Mt Cook. See the twin glacier flights.

$393 to $395: four options. Three are 40 to 60-minute flights toward Aoraki/Mt Cook, including INFLITE’s Grand Circle. The fourth is Franz Josef Glacier Guides’ glacier landing, which takes about an hour from check-in and gives you up to 15 minutes on the ice with a guide. The long flights are on our Mount Cook page.

$480 to $508: three options. The Fox and Franz Josef heli-hikes, with guiding, crampons and waterproofs included, and Glacier Country Helicopters’ one-hour flight over four glaciers with two snow landings. The hikes are on our heli-hike page.

$876 to $1,128: two full-day trips. The extended heli-hike with lunch, for at most four guests, and the plane-and-helicopter day from Queenstown, which includes hotel pickup there and two scenic plane flights.

A few longer or private flights are on GetYourGuide without a page of their own here. HeliServices’ 40-minute Grand Tour costs $351, Glacier Country Helicopters’ 50-minute Shackleton Glacier flight $450 and its 90-minute Grand Adventure $846. INFLITE’s private Picnic Amongst the Peaks is the only one priced per group: $2,262 for up to six, about $377 each if six share.

What pushes the price up

Length. Moving from a 25-minute flight to a 35-minute flight adds $57 per person ($223 to $280), and a 45-minute flight adds another $113 ($393). Beyond that the price flattens: the 60-minute Grand Circle costs $2 more than the 45-minute 3-glacier flight.

Landings. More landings cost more: the one-hour flight with two snow landings is $506, against $393 for 45 minutes with one. The landing itself is not what you pay for on the shortest flights. Glacier Country Helicopters sells an 18-minute twin glacier overflight with no landing for $223, the same as its 25-minute landing flight, and says it adjusts the price when a landing flight turns into an overflight.

Crossing to Mt Cook. A trip over the Main Divide is not automatically expensive. INFLITE’s 30-minute Tasman Glacier landing costs $243, while the 40 and 45-minute Mt Cook routes from The Helicopter Line and Glacier Country Helicopters cost $393. You pay for the minutes more than for the destination.

Guiding on the ice. A heli-hike adds a guide, the gear and hours on the glacier. Franz Josef Glacier Guides runs its standard heli-hike at one guide to eleven guests, up to 2.5 hours on the ice and about 4 hours in all, for $508. The extended version with lunch, at one guide to four, costs $876.

The last column is approximate: it divides the price by the minutes printed on the GetYourGuide listing card. That card time includes the landing, so the price per minute spent in the air is a little higher than shown. n/a means the card shows no flight time in minutes, or the time covers a hike, a briefing or a plane trip.

The From column is the per-person price for two adults on a real date in October 2026. GetYourGuide prices can move with the date, so the figure on your booking page is the one that counts.

Read the column for the pattern. Most scenic flights cost about $8 to $10 per card minute, whatever their length. The 20-minute Glacier Helicopters flight is the most expensive per minute at about $11, and the Grand Circle the cheapest at about $7. So a longer flight costs more in total, but you are not paying a steep premium for each extra minute. Every flight in the table is priced per person, and every listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before and the option to reserve now and pay later.

Ratings and review counts for each flight are on the which flight guide and the individual tour pages.

Extra charges and weight rules by operator

There is no single weight rule at Franz Josef. Each operator sets its own, and depending on the operator a heavier passenger pays a surcharge, risks a reschedule or cannot fly:

OperatorRule
Glacier Country HelicoptersNo set limit; passengers of 120 kg or more, weighed at check-in, buy a Comfort Seat at half the flight price. Front-seat requests are confirmed at check-in for a fee.
Glacier Helicopters, The Helicopter LineNo per-person maximum; the flight may be rescheduled if your actual weight is 15 kg or more above the weight you declared.
INFLITEPassenger limit of 116 kg.
Franz Josef Glacier Guides heli-hikeMinimum 35 kg, maximum 115 kg. Its glacier landing has no weight limit.
Fox Glacier Guiding heli-hikeRestrictions over 116 kg, which may include cancellation.
True South Flights, from QueenstownOver 115 kg or under 30 kg cannot join.

Other costs to expect. A few reviewers were offered a photo taken at the landing for about 20 dollars extra. One paid about 100 dollars more per person to switch to a different flight when weather closed the route they had booked, so ask what any change will cost before you agree to it. The heli-hikes do not include food or drinks, except the extended one with lunch. If you book direct, Glacier Country Helicopters adds 2.5% for credit cards and international debit cards, and HeliServices adds a temporary NZ$20 fuel surcharge per passenger.

US dollars here, NZ dollars at the operator

GetYourGuide shows these flights in US dollars. The operators publish New Zealand dollars on their own sites, including 15% GST. On the products that can be matched, the two line up:

FlightOperator’s own priceGetYourGuide
HeliServices 20-minute snow landingNZ$360 (valid to 30 September 2027)$204
The Helicopter Line twin glacier, 35 minNZ$495 (no date shown)$280
The Helicopter Line Mt Cook route, 40 minNZ$695 (no date shown)$393
INFLITE Tasman Glacier, 30 minfrom NZ$429$243
Franz Josef Glacier Guides glacier landingNZ$699 (valid to 30 September 2027)$395
Franz Josef Glacier Guides heli-hikeNZ$899 (valid to 30 September 2027)$508

On each of these, the US dollar price works out at about 57 US cents per NZ dollar, so GetYourGuide appears to charge the operator’s own price, converted. This is a calculation, not a published policy, and not every listing matches: INFLITE’s Grand Circle is NZ$749 direct and $395 on GetYourGuide. Glacier Country Helicopters’ and Glacier Helicopters’ own price pages still showed rates valid only to 30 September 2026 in October 2026, so check their sites for current direct prices.

Children and infants

Child fares differ by operator, and the rules below are the operators’ own. Glacier Helicopters charges children of 4 to 14 at 70% of the adult price and infants under 4 at 50%. HeliServices charges children of 4 to 14 at half price and flies infants under 15 kg free on a lap on its 20-minute flight. Glacier Country Helicopters seats infants of 0 to 3 on a knee and gives children of 4 to 17 their own seat. INFLITE charges a seat for an infant, under Civil Aviation Authority rules. On a GetYourGuide booking, the price for each traveler type shows when you choose your party. Franz Josef Glacier Guides charges the same NZ$899 for adults and children on its heli-hike, which starts at age 10.

How to pay less

  • Book the 20-minute flight. HeliServices’ 20-minute snow landing costs $204 and Glacier Helicopters’ $223. See our breakdown.
  • Fly from either village. Fox and Franz Josef flights of the same length cost the same: $223 for 25 minutes from either one.
  • Pick Fox for the heli-hike. Fox Glacier Guiding’s heli-hike costs $480, $28 less than the Franz Josef heli-hike, with up to 3 hours on the ice. See our breakdown.
  • Land on the Tasman Glacier for $243 with INFLITE, $150 less than the 45-minute Mt Cook flights.
  • Stand on the ice without a full hike. The glacier landing at $395 gives you up to 15 minutes on Franz Josef Glacier with a guide, $113 less than the heli-hike.
  • Book your first full day. A weather cancellation on your last morning leaves no day to reschedule; one early in your stay can be moved.

The free option is the Franz Josef Glacier valley walk, 1.7 km return and about 30 minutes, which ends at a viewpoint about 3 km from the glacier’s face. You cannot walk onto the ice from the valley. DOC charges NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day at the glacier car park, card only.

What you get back when the weather turns

Every GetYourGuide listing here can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before. If the operator cancels for weather, you are offered a reschedule or a full refund. That 24-hour rule governs a GetYourGuide booking, whatever the operator’s own direct terms say. A few reviewers waited weeks for a refund after a weather cancellation, so keep your booking confirmation and follow up through GetYourGuide, because operators say they cannot process refunds for third-party bookings.

If the flight goes but cannot land, Glacier Country Helicopters adjusts the price, and other operators handle it their own way. Ask at check-in what you will pay before you take off. Our weather guide covers cancellations and the seasons.
