Best time to visit Franz Josef Glacier for a helicopter flight

When to fly at Franz Josef: rain in every month, why short flights cancel more often, seasons, winter snow, refund rules and the backup-day plan that works.

Updated October 2026

Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere) has no dry season. The national park sits in the path of the westerly winds, rain can arrive in any month, and the area gets roughly five meters or more of it a year. The month you choose matters less than the way you plan the days inside your trip: book your helicopter flight for the morning of your first full day in Franz Josef and keep a second day free, so a cancelled flight can move instead of being lost.

If snow at the landing site matters and you travel in summer, choose a flight that lands on a glacier. INFLITE’s 30-min Flight Franz Josef & Tasman Glaciers crosses the Main Divide to land on the Tasman Glacier, from $243 per person and rated 4.8 from 93 GetYourGuide reviews, and its listing says weather cancellations are 100% refundable.

How wet Franz Josef is, and what grounds a flight

The figures vary with the source. The Department of Conservation (DOC) says the park can get up to five meters of rain a year. Franz Josef Glacier Guides puts it at 6 to 8 meters. A 1991 to 2020 climate compilation lists Franz Josef at 5,555 mm a year with 169 wet days. Whichever figure you take, Franz Josef is among the wettest places in New Zealand, and DOC adds that heavy rain can come at any time of year.

Rain is only part of it. Glacier Country Helicopters says rain, wind and cloud all affect flights, and that the township and the Alps can have quite different weather on the same day. You can stand in sunshine on the main road while cloud sits over the landing sites, so a forecast a week out tells you little.

No operator publishes a cancellation rate for Franz Josef, so treat any percentage you read with suspicion. What the operators do say is that reschedules happen regularly. The final call comes late: Glacier Helicopters and HeliServices make it at check-in, 30 minutes before departure, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides decides just before the trip leaves. A heli-hike needs more: Franz Josef Glacier Guides says it needs a four-hour window of clear weather, and if the helicopter cannot fly, the hike does not run.

Arrive with a plan for a lost day. Glacier Helicopters says flights usually depart between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., depending on season and weather, so a morning booking leaves the rest of the day for a later slot if the operator can offer one.

Why the short flights cancel more often

The shortest flights carry the most weather risk, and one operator says so in its own listing. Glacier Country Helicopters’ Helicopter Flight & Alpine Landing, the 25-minute flight from $223 and the most-reviewed flight here (4.8 from 696 reviews), says it has the highest cancellation rate. It uses a single route and a single landing site, so when cloud covers that route there is no backup. The company’s longer flights have several route and landing options, which gives the pilot more ways to make a flight work on a marginal day.

Even when a flight goes, the landing can change. Glacier Country Helicopters says it can never fully guarantee one and adjusts the price when a flight becomes an overflight. In summer, its 25-minute flight may make an alpine landing if there is no snow at the usual site. Several low-star reviews of the short flights describe exactly this: a landing moved to a different, less snowy site, or skipped because cloud came in.

The same operator also sells an 18-Minute Twin Glacier Helicopter Flight with no landing at all, from $223. Its listing explains why: on days when cloud, wind or rain keep helicopters out of the high landing sites, it can still fly over the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers lower down. It is a useful fallback when the forecast is poor and you have no second day.

If you are deciding between lengths with Glacier Country Helicopters, the extra money for a longer flight buys more than airtime: it gives the pilot more choices on a cloudy morning. Our snow landing page compares the short flights, and the twin glacier page covers the 30 to 35-minute flights over both glaciers.

Franz Josef Glacier Guides gives December to February as peak season. Glacier Helicopters says November to March is its busiest period and recommends booking about a month ahead then, and about two weeks ahead at other times. It does not take online bookings inside 24 hours of departure, so call or visit the base for a same-day seat.

Rain can fall in every season, so the best month for you is the one with the most spare days in your plans. If you can choose freely, the months outside November to March are easier to book. December to February bring the most visitors, and DOC says Lake Matheson near Fox Glacier is busy from November to April.

Is winter a good time to fly?

Yes, if you dress for it. Franz Josef Glacier Guides runs all year and describes winter as quieter, with extra insulation layers on the ice. HeliServices says it can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler on the snow than in the village in any season, so the difference is bigger when the village is already cold. You will hear locally that winter brings clearer days, but no weather service figure supports it, so do not plan a winter trip on that promise alone.

Does it snow in Franz Josef?

High up, yes, and that is where the flights go. DOC says the snowfields of the upper névé can only be seen from a helicopter or ski plane, and every landing flight heads for snow high on the glacier or in the surrounding mountains. In the village, plan for rain: it is the weather that changes your plans far more often.

Snow at the landing site depends on the type of landing. INFLITE separates an alpine landing, on a mountain site that may have no snow in the warmer months, from a glacier landing directly on the glacier, which has more reliable snow all year. Franz Josef Glacier Guides lands on the icefall at around 1,300 meters on its Glacier Landing flight. In summer, if standing on snow is the point of your flight, read the listing for the words glacier landing. The Mount Cook flights from Franz Josef that land on the Tasman Glacier are on our Mount Cook page.

Morning or afternoon

No reliable source shows that mornings are clearer than afternoons at Franz Josef, so be wary of anyone who promises one. The argument for a morning booking is practical. If the 9 a.m. flight is cancelled, the operator may still fit you onto a later departure the same day, while a cancelled 4 p.m. flight has nowhere to go but tomorrow.

Heli-hikes run on fixed start times, which makes the morning even more useful. In summer, Franz Josef Glacier Guides runs heli-hikes at 7:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., so an early hike leaves two later departures as backup. In winter, The Helicopter Line steers children toward hikes from 11 a.m. onward, because the ice is riskier early in the day.

Cancellation and refund rules

On GetYourGuide, every Franz Josef and Fox listing on this site offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. That 24-hour rule governs a GetYourGuide booking, whatever the operator’s own direct-booking terms say. When the operator cancels for weather, the listings offer a reschedule or a full refund, and refunds go back through GetYourGuide: Glacier Country Helicopters says it cannot process refunds for bookings made through an agent.

Two rules catch people out. A heli-hike that is cut short is not always refunded: Franz Josef Glacier Guides considers a partial refund only when you get less than 1.5 hours on the ice, and none at 1.5 hours or more. And a missed check-in costs the whole fare at Glacier Country Helicopters, so allow for parking and arrive 30 minutes early (15 minutes for Franz Josef Glacier Guides).

A few reviewers of one twin-glacier flight say they were still waiting for a weather refund from GetYourGuide two weeks later, and others were rescheduled three or four times before giving up. Keep your booking confirmation and ask for the refund in writing as soon as you know you cannot fly.

The backup-day rule in practice

Every operator gives the same advice: book your flight for your first day in the area so you have spare days to fall back on. Franz Josef Glacier Guides suggests at least two days. In practice:

  1. Arrive the evening before, so your first full day starts in Franz Josef.
  2. Book the earliest flight or heli-hike that suits you on that first morning.
  3. Keep the second morning free. If the first flight is cancelled, rebook straight away for that slot.
  4. If both days look bad and you must leave, ask about the overflight or a shorter flight; lower routes sometimes fly when the high landing sites are closed.

If you are based in Fox Glacier, the same rule applies there; our Franz Josef or Fox Glacier guide compares the two villages.

If your flight does not go

A grounded day can still be a good one. The Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk is 1.7 km return, about 30 minutes, and ends at a viewpoint about 3 km from the face; DOC closes the track at times for ice collapse, flooding or landslides, so check at the visitor center on Cron Street first. The West Coast Wildlife Centre in Franz Josef opens from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and has kiwi and tuatara. Lake Matheson, about 30 minutes south near Fox Glacier, gives its mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook on a fine, windless morning or evening, so keep it for the day the weather clears.

Whatever the season, carry warm and waterproof layers, as DOC advises, and insect repellent for the sandflies. Our what to wear guide covers the clothing in detail, and the heli-hike page explains what happens when the helicopter cannot fly to the ice. For the featured flight, see our Tasman Glacier flight breakdown and the 25-minute flight breakdown.
